Character Breakdown
Willy (or Wilhemenia) Porter

Male or Female, Flexible age, Tenor/Baritone or Soprano With Belt
A cheerful, enthusiastic newsboy and storyteller who helps set the scene of New York at Christmastime. Willy brings energy, wit and youthful charm, acting as both narrator and participant in the story. He represents the hopeful, bustling spirit of the city, drawing the audience into the world of Jim and Della. Requires strong singing voice, charisma and the ability to connect directly with the audience.
Jim Dillingham

Male, 20s–30s, Baritone/Tenor
A sincere, hardworking young man who has recently moved to New York with his wife, Della. Though struggling financially, he is full of hope, humor and deep love for Della. Needs strong acting skills to convey warmth, frustration and devotion.
Della Dillingham

Female, 20s–30s, Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano
Jim’s spirited, optimistic wife. Despite financial hardship, she carries a playful energy and an unwavering love for her husband. Della is emotional, witty and resourceful. Requires strong singing and acting range to balance joy, tenderness and vulnerability.
City Him

Male, Flexible age, Tenor/Baritone
The “voice” of New York—sometimes narrator, sometimes multiple colorful characters (pawnbroker, policeman, etc.). Wry, quick, versatile. Strong comedic timing, physicality, and vocal flexibility required.
City Her

Female, Flexible age, Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano
Counterpart to City Him. Serves as guide, narrator, and comic relief while stepping into various roles. Bright, sharp, and engaging. Must handle fast-paced dialogue and quick character changes with energy and clarity.
Soapy Smith

Male, 30s–60s, Baritone
A homeless man who provides both humor and pathos. While lighthearted in his schemes to get arrested for the winter, he also reveals a deeper longing for human connection. Strong comedic actor who can balance humor with genuine heart.
